McCarthyism and Climate Change

The Huffington Post provides a platform for Clive Hamilton, econut and wannabe politician from Australia
to bewail the fact that there are still skeptics out there and they are persecuting the true believers.
Is it strange that Sarah Palin, who once thought Africa was a country, now quotes verbatim from emails stolen from Britain's Climatic Research Unit or that Lord Monckton, a leading English climate denier, addresses a Tea Party rally in America?

Hamilton is right on one point when he says that there is McCarthyism rampant in the Global Warming arena. McCarthyism is defined by Wiktionary as The mass pressure, harassment, and/or blacklisting used to pressure people to follow popular political beliefs. It sounds like poor old Clive has got things the wrong way round as the popular political belief today is Warmism and skeptics lose their jobs for speaking out. His whole rant makes as much sense as the Nazis accusing the Jews of persecution!
Targeting individuals at their residences is a strong indication that the intimidation campaign is determined and well-orchestrated. Internet sites like Climate Depot focus the efforts of an emerging army of aggressive bloggers. This reflects climate denial's jump from the world of think tanks into wider populist politics where the "global warming conspiracy" segues into a cauldron of right-wing grievances. Climate Depot is managed by a conservative activist -- Mark Marano -- famous for demanding that climate scientists be "publicly flogged." The site supplies a steady stream of anti-warming tirades from other conservative icons including Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Anne Coulter.

After his snide comments about Sarah Palin , Hamilton could at least have spelt Marc Morano's name correctly before he bagged him
The various arms of these climate change denial efforts are united by their loathing of environmentalism. Environmentalism is variously seen to be the enemy of individual freedom, an ideology of smug elites, an attack on the consumerist basis of capitalism, or the vanguard of world government.

Here he gets it almost right. Big Environmentalism is seen as all the above and is vigorously opposed by skeptics who by and large in my circle are very environmentally conscious . Hamilton and his ilk  who have tied Global Warming to the environment cause are doing the movement a great disservice. For the record if Huffington Post wants some enlightened comment from Down Under I'm sure Professor Bob Carter or Dr Ian Plimer would be delighted to provide some real information. Hamilton is not one of our better exports!
