Endless Winter in Alaska

Alaska was touted as the global warming canary when it was warming but over the last few years the cold has returned with a vengeance and the faithful have become very quiet on the subject.

Think spring is well overdue? You’re right. Below average temperatures are lingering over much of Alaska, and upcoming forecasts do not hold the promise of warmer weather anytime soon.
The cold weather is due to the Polar Jet Stream, a fast flowing air current cascading off the North Pole and Arctic Ocean, that is pushing cold, dry air over large parts of Alaska, causing below normal temperatures for much of the state, the National Weather Service writes on its Facebook page.
“In some cases, daytime highs are running close to 10-20ºF below normal.” NWS writes.
And that’s not all … The NWS’s Climate Prediction Center is forecasting continued chilly temperatures well below normal temperatures for the next 8 to 14 days. The prolonged cold is due to high pressure over the Bering Sea that is preventing the weather pattern from shifting, NWS writes.
Elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere the news is no better with spring temperatures way below normal.
A remarkably frigid spring is putting the freeze on global warming from Russia to the U.K. and from Alaska to Florida. The Russian International News Agency reports the exceptionally cold spring, even by Russian standards, is delaying the annual bird migration. The U.K. Guardian reports record cold temperatures killed thousands of newborn lambs throughout the British Isles. The Alaska Dispatch saluted residents with “Welcome to Spring!” while reporting temperatures remaining below zero and threatening longtime records. The Tampa Bay Times reported an extended spell of frigid temperatures forced animal experts to rescue a South Florida manatee at a time when Floridians are usually basking on beach sands. The Real Science climate blog noted there were 30 times more cold temperature records set in the United States this week than warm temperature records. NASA satellite instruments reported February 2013 temperatures that were approximately average compared to the past dozen years, a time period during which global temperatures have plateaued. Temperatures have plateaued even though annual global carbon dioxide emissions have risen by approximately one-third since the year 2000
We may not hear too much warmist bleating about early springs for a while.

Lilliputians attack a great man!

Scientists with minds that could not comprehend the majority of Freeman Dyson's work are attacking him because he disagrees with the climate religion. When Dyson granted an interview recently his common-sense statements on global warming have incensed the Climate Clergy and their acolytes.  Peter Gleick  the disgraced scientist who fraudulently obtained documents from Heartland and has been accused of forgery tweets that "it will forever diminish his legacy".

Dyson's interview is here:

Freeman Dyson is a physicist who has been teaching at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton since Albert Einstein was there. When Einstein died in 1955, there was an opening for the title of "most brilliant physicist on the planet." Dyson has filled it.
dyson.jpgFreeman Dyson
So when the global-warming movement came along, a lot of people wondered why he didn’t come along with it. The reason he’s a skeptic is simple, the 89-year-old Dyson said when I phoned him.
"I think any good scientist ought to be a skeptic," Dyson said.

Dyson came to this country from his native England at age 23 and immediately made major breakthroughs in quantum theory. After that he worked on a nuclear-powered rocket (see video below). Then in the late 1970s, he got involved with early research on climate change at the Institute for Energy Analysis in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
That research, which involved scientists from many disciplines, was based on experimentation. The scientists studied such questions as how atmospheric carbon dioxide interacts with plant life and the role of clouds in warming.

But that approach lost out to the computer-modeling approach favored by climate scientists. And that approach was flawed from the beginning, Dyson said.
"I just think they don’t understand the climate," he said of climatologists. "Their computer models are full of fudge factors."
A major fudge factor concerns the role of clouds. The greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide on its own is limited. To get to the apocalyptic projections trumpeted by Al Gore and company, the models have to include assumptions that CO-2 will cause clouds to form in a way that produces more warming.
"The models are extremely oversimplified," he said. "They don't represent the clouds in detail at all. They simply use a fudge factor to represent the clouds."
Dyson said his skepticism about those computer models was borne out by recent reports of a study by Ed Hawkins of the University of Reading in Great Britain that showed global temperatures were flat between 2000 and 2010 — even though we humans poured record amounts of CO-2 into the atmosphere during that decade.
That was vindication for a man who was termed "a civil heretic" in a New York Times Magazine article on his contrarian views. Dyson embraces that label, with its implication that what he opposes is a religious movement. So does his fellow Princeton physicist and fellow skeptic, William Happer.
"There are people who just need a cause that’s bigger than themselves," said Happer. "Then they can feel virtuous and say other people are not virtuous."
To show how uncivil this crowd can get, Happer e-mailed me an article about an Australian professor who proposes — quite seriously — the death penalty for heretics such as Dyson. As did Galileo, they can get a reprieve if they recant.
I hope that guy never gets to hear Dyson’s most heretical assertion: Atmospheric CO-2 may actually be improving the environment.
"It’s certainly true that carbon dioxide is good for vegetation," Dyson said. "About 15 percent of agricultural yields are due to CO-2 we put in the atmosphere. From that point of view, it’s a real plus to burn coal and oil."
In fact, there’s more solid evidence for the beneficial effects of CO-2 than the negative effects, he said. So why does the public hear only one side of this debate? Because the media do an awful job of reporting it.

"They’re absolutely lousy," he said of American journalists. "That’s true also in Europe. I don’t know why they’ve been brainwashed."
I know why: They’re lazy. Instead of digging into the details, most journalists are content to repeat that mantra about "consensus" among climate scientists.
The problem, said Dyson, is that the consensus is based on those computer models. Computers are great for analyzing what happened in the past, he said, but not so good at figuring out what will happen in the future. But a lot of scientists have built their careers on them. Hence the hatred for dissenters.
"It was similar in the Soviet Union," he said. "Who could doubt Marxist economics was the future? Everything else was in the dustbin."
There’s a lot of room left in that bin for the ideas promulgated by people dumber than Dyson. Which is just about everyone.
ADD: This quote from the great H.L. Mencken captures perfectly the religious nature of those in the climate cult:
"The essence of science is that it is always willing to abandon a given idea, however fundamental it may seem to be, for a better one; the essence of theology is that it holds its truths to be eternal and immutable.

CO2 , Poison Ivy and Triffids

The Warmist vision of the future
Talk about researching the bleeding obvious.
Increasing CO2 is a major boon to agriculture with food plants growing faster and producing more. However the doom-and-gloom climate intelligentsia have done their research on nasty  poison ivy rather than food crops and surprise, surprise it grows faster with increasing CO2 . Who da thunkit! Keep these fellows in mind for the next Nobel prize joining other luminaries such as Yasser Arafat ,Al Gore and Obama. This is reported as  the "Attack of the 500 pound poison ivy" ,an article in in the green rag Oneearth . I am told the poisonous Deadly Nightshade plant also grows better with more CO2 and  it should be worth a research grant or two to check that out.
“Think of heat islands or cities as climate change in miniature,” Ziska says. “There are higher C02 concentrations, higher temperatures. There’s a fragmentation of ecosystems. All of those factors allow poison ivy to enter an environment that it may not have been in before.”
Apparently UHI (which we are told by climatologists is negligible) is going to make monster ivy plants grow. I wish they would get their stories straight.

Many chiefs,few indians!

Australia has much is common with other Western countries with a bloated public bureaucracy with wages, pensions and conditions well above those provided in the private sector for similar work. The Coalition has already flagged the Climate Change Department for the axe but it seems that much more will be needed to be done with these statistics. The ratio of non-wealth producing workers to private industry workers continues to increase inexorably in Australia as in other countries and it will take a major political will to turn the boat around.

The Australian public service is increasingly top-heavy, with 45,000 officials, or 29 per cent of all permanent employees, now classified as executives.
Analysis by The Australian has found there is now one manager for every 2.5 ordinary workers in the federal bureaucracy.
And the rise in the top five pay grades in Canberra accounts for almost all of the growth in the public service during the past five years, with an annual cost to taxpayers of $1.3 billion for the 10,000-plus extra executives.
Since 1998, the number of middle managers in the federal bureaucracy, known as EL1s and EL2s, has jumped 132 per cent, while the elite, three-grade Senior Executive Service has expanded 78 per cent.
The total number of so-called "ongoing" employees in the Australian Public Service increased by 42 per cent over that period, compared with a 22 per cent rise in the nation's population.
The annual cost to the federal budget of executive remuneration, including salary, superannuation, vehicle allowance and bonus payments, is $6bn.
Public finance experts point to so-called "classification creep" as one of the reasons behind the growth in executive ranks, particularly at the top end, as people move to higher pay grades without a change in the nature of work being performed. Put another way, in many cases executives are performing work that used to be done by staff on lower grades.
According to the most recent report on remuneration by the Australian Public Service Commission, the average total reward of the highest classification (SES Band 3), of which there were 135 officials, was $358,552.

Another Gyro Gearloose global warming theory

More desperate floundering from the embattled climate propaganda bunker has climate "scientists" claiming that somehow global warming is causing increased Antarctica sea ice. This is not a giant step the  people who brought us the cockamamie theory that global warming is causing huge snowfalls and crippling winters in the Northern Hemisphere. This follows on from the "discovery" of Trenberth's missing heat lurking in the ocean depths where somehow a temperature difference of a few hundredths of a degree is waiting to strike humanity a mortal blow. Warming causing more ice is about as logical as most warmist theories.

Global warming is expanding the extent of sea ice around Antarctica, researchers have revealed.
They say in winter a shift is caused by cold plumes of summer melt water that re-freeze fast when temperatures drop.
An increasing summer thaw of ice on the edges of Antarctica, twinned with less than expected snowfall on the frozen continent, is also adding slightly to sea level rise in a threat to low-lying areas around the world, the report said.
Ice is made of fresh water and, when ice shelves on the fringes of Antarctica thaw in summer because of upwellings of warming sea water, the meltwater forms a cool layer that floats on the denser, warmer salty sea water below, the study said.

In winter, the melt water readily turns to ice because it freezes at zero degrees Celsius, above sea water at -2C (28.4F).
