California "record" drought
I've been told from a reliable source that California's "record-breaking" drought is a sign of climate change caused by the dreaded CO2 . However a new paper says the three year drought is not linked to climate change but has natural causes.
Natural temperature swings in the ocean, not global warming, are driving California's extreme drought, according to a new government study.
Researchers said sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean set up an atmospheric roadblock off the West Coast that diverted winter storms away from California. The state relies on winter rain and snow for most of its yearly water.
The roadblock is a persistent ridge of high pressure that first formed in 2011 during a La Niña event. Even though La Niña broke down after the 2011-2012 winter, the western equatorial Pacific Ocean remained a warm water bull's-eye, a pattern known to trigger droughts in the Southwest and California, the researchers report.
Of course this has brought the Global-warming-causes-everything lobby out in force so watch to see the paper withdrawn.
However a thousand years ago California suffered 200 year droughts according to Dr Scott Styne in a New York Times article.
BEGINNING about 1,100 years ago, what is now California baked in two droughts, the first lasting 220 years and the second 140 years. Each was much more intense than the mere six-year dry spells that afflict modern California from time to time, new studies of past climates show. The findings suggest, in fact, that relatively wet periods like the 20th century have been the exception rather than the rule in California for at least the last 3,500 years, and that mega-droughts are likely to recur.
The evidence for the big droughts comes from an analysis of the trunks of trees that grew in the dry beds of lakes, swamps and rivers in and adjacent to the Sierra Nevada, but died when the droughts ended and the water levels rose. Immersion in water has preserved the trunks over the centuries.
This warming was obviously caused by Californian Indians ripping around in SUVs and motorcycles spewing dangerous greenhouse gases with no thought for the future.
